This image is a piece of a beautiful and much larger photo by Ron Dahlrquist. I first saw this image of kayakers at play over Oluwalu coral reef in Maui in a magazine–I think it was a kayaking magazine, but have forgotten. As a kayaker and coral reef lover, the image grabbed me immediately. I tore it out and kept it. Eventually I tracked down the photographer and got permission to use it here.
I am also a fan of Ian McArg’s comment that coral reefs may be among the best design inspirations for our gardens, and think this image is a perfect illustration of that idea.
